Tallow, Honey, Vitamin E, and Frankincense: Why These Natural Skincare Ingredients Matter

By Carrie Patterson

We get asked a lot why we only use four natural skincare ingredients. Sometimes fewer, depending on the jar. The honest answer isn't that four is some magic number. It's that we hold every ingredient to the same standard: natural, recognizable, and able to tell you exactly what job it's doing. Right now, for this product, that standard lands us at four.

Every ingredient in a Hide & Honey jar has a job. Not a marketing job, an actual job your skin can use. Beef tallow carries everything else and does most of the moisturizing on its own. Raw honey pulls in and holds onto water. Vitamin E protects the batch and supports your skin's antioxidant defenses. Frankincense calms things down. Four natural ingredients, four mechanisms, and not one of them is in there for show.

Consider this your guide to natural skincare ingredients, at least the four we trust. We didn't set out to build a "clean beauty" brand. We set out to put the fewest, most recognizable things on our skin that we could, and it turned out that's exactly what clean skincare was supposed to mean before it became a label on a bottle.

Most skincare products don't work this way. Walk through the ingredient list on a typical cosmetic formulation and you'll find twenty, thirty, sometimes closer to forty cosmetic ingredients. Some of those are doing real work. A lot of them are there to extend shelf life, mask the smell of the actual active ingredients, or make the texture feel a certain way in a lab test. We went the other direction. If a natural ingredient can't tell you what it's doing and why it's there, it doesn't make the jar.

Tallow is the base, not just a cosmetic ingredient

Start with the fat. Grass-finished beef tallow makes up most of what's in the jar, and it's doing the heaviest lifting as both a skin care staple and a natural skin care carrier. Its fatty acid profile sits close to your own skin's natural oil, sebum: roughly 50 percent saturated fat (palmitic and stearic), about 46 percent monounsaturated fat, and only around 2 percent polyunsaturated fat. That's a composition comparison, not a promise that it works like sebum once it's on your skin. Human sebum runs closer to 31 percent palmitic, 21 percent sapienic, 11 percent stearic, and 8 percent oleic, so it's not a perfect match. It's just a closer match than what you'll find in most natural oil or care product alternatives.

In this jar, tallow is the only ingredient that's truly load-bearing. Honey, vitamin E, and frankincense all need a carrier, something to hold them against your skin long enough to do anything. Tallow is that carrier. Take it out and you don't have a lighter product, you have three good natural cosmetic ingredients with nowhere to land.

Every batch starts with tallow rendered from cattle raised the way we'd want for our own table. We know every producer we buy from and how they raise their animals: grass-fed and grass-finished, no feedlots, no grains, no hormones, no antibiotics, no mRNA. That's a standard we hold across every producer, not a single-ranch story. The same standard backs the beef at texasgrassfedfarms.com, our sister brand and the place this whole thing started.

Honey brings the water back in

Tallow moisturizes, but it doesn't hydrate the skin on its own. That's honey's job. Raw honey is a natural humectant, one of the best natural ingredients for that purpose, meaning it draws moisture in and holds it there. It also brings a mild antimicrobial quality of its own thanks to its low pH and the small amount of hydrogen peroxide it produces. We use Texas wildflower honey, not Manuka, because wildflower honey is local, recognizable, and does the job without the imported price tag.

Pair it with tallow and you get two different kinds of hydration working at once in the same care formulation: an occlusive layer that locks moisture in, and a humectant underneath pulling moisture toward the skin in the first place. Neither one replaces the other. That's the whole point of combining natural skincare products this way, and it's a big part of why dry skin responds to this pairing better than to either ingredient alone.

Vitamin E protects the jar and supports the skin

Grass-finished tallow already carries a meaningful amount of naturally occurring vitamin E, but we add more because it does two things at once. Inside the jar, tocopherol helps slow oxidation, the same process that makes oils go rancid, so it's doing real work as a natural preservative. On your skin, vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals and offers some support to the skin barrier, one of the better-studied natural antioxidants in skin care.

We'll say the quiet part out loud here, since honesty is the whole brand: vitamin E doesn't heal scars. A well-known 1999 clinical trial tested topical vitamin E against plain petroleum jelly for scar appearance and found no real improvement from the vitamin E. We still use it, because antioxidant support and barrier support are real benefits for skin concerns like everyday dryness and dullness. We just won't tell you it does something the research doesn't back up.

Frankincense is the only ingredient that's optional

Here's where the "four ingredients, or fewer" part comes in. Our unscented body butter is just three ingredients: tallow, honey, and vitamin E. Add frankincense and you get the scented version, the one most people reach for first.

Frankincense is a botanical, an essential oil and resin tapped from trees rather than rendered or harvested like the others. It contributes boswellic acids, which work through an anti-inflammatory mechanism (5-LOX inhibition, if you want the technical term) rather than anything structural. Those anti-inflammatory properties are what people are actually feeling when they notice that mild, temporary tightening after using frankincense, not collagen production and not a fix for fine lines. It's a real mechanism with real research behind it. It's just not the same thing as a retinol, and we're not going to pretend it is.

What four natural skincare ingredients actually buys you

People ask us what the best natural ingredients for skincare are, as if there's a single magic list. There isn't. What matters more is how few skincare ingredients you actually need once you pick natural cosmetic ingredients that each do something different in the formulation. Our four (or three, depending on the jar) cover moisture, hydration, antioxidant support, and calming, and none of them are doing the same job as another ingredient already in the jar.

That's the real argument for simplicity in any cosmetic formulation. It's not that fewer ingredients are automatically better. It's that once you've covered carrying, hydrating, protecting, and calming, anything else you add is probably there to make the label longer, not the product better. A wholesale cosmetic ingredients supplier will sell you a hundred natural oils and extracts. Most skin types don't need more than these four doing their actual jobs.

Think of it less like a single best ingredient and more like four roles that need filling. You need something to carry the rest and moisturize on its own. You need something to hydrate. You need something to protect the formula and support your skin's own defenses. And you need something to keep things calm. Once those four jobs are covered, you've got a complete natural skincare product. Adding a fifth ingredient on top of that isn't adding more benefit, it's usually just adding more risk of irritation for no real gain, especially for acne-prone skin or anyone already careful about what touches their face.

What this won't do

A jar of tallow, honey, vitamin E, and frankincense won't erase wrinkles and fine lines. It won't treat eczema or acne, and it won't work overnight. What it will do is give dry, tired human skin four natural skincare ingredients that each pull their own weight, made small-batch from a supply chain we actually trust. Individual results vary, the way they do with any skincare routine, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than oversell you on the first jar.

This four-ingredient lineup is where we're launching, not a ceiling we'll never touch again. As we build out other natural skincare products, the standard stays the same even if the ingredient count doesn't: recognizable, natural, and able to justify its spot in the jar.

If you want to feel what four ingredients working together actually feels like, our whipped tallow and honey body butter with frankincense is the one that started it all. A little goes a long way.
